LivingKitchen 2017 Review: Best of International Kitchen Show in Cologne
German kitchen furniture and equipment industry is rightfully considered to be one of the most powerful in the world. That’s probably why the most important international kitchen show takes place in this very country, in the city of Cologne. Is it just an exhibition of kitchen furniture and appliances? No. This is namely a kitchen show – an event that sets and demonstrates key trends of kitchen interior design for the entire year. This exhibition is held to show the world the products and innovations created by both national and foreign manufacturers, and thereby generate new ideas for further kitchen interior design development.
What were they? Based on the analysis of all the exhibits, interior designers who visited the show have put together a list of main kitchen trends that were represented in Cologne. Here they are:
1. Turnaround for the tactile experience
Extremely fast time fulfilled with super-sleek surfaces of smartphones and tablets has awakened in us a desperate desire to see and touch. And kitchen furniture producers have directed our energy towards such concepts as home, coziness, and comfort of the family hearth, where we can slow down the pace of our lives, get away from the fuss and take some time off. For this purpose used are various finishes that stimulate our tactile experience and more comprehensive color shades. And dimensions of kitchen sets also change – they become lighter and airier.
2. Deeper countertops & downdraft extractors
One more obvious innovation is the implementation of countertop extractors. With this brand new equipment we obviate the need for customary cooker hoods, but at the same time the structure of a downdraft extractor takes up a lot of space in base cabinets. Consequently, the average countertop depth of approximately 60 cm increases up to 80-90 cm.

3. Shallow top drawers
More and more producers offer increasingly popular shallow top drawers with the height of just 10-12 cm.
4. Glass kitchen cabinet doors
Most of the stands at the exhibition demonstrated glass kitchen cabinet doors.
5. Tall pull-out cabinets
A great majority of kitchen sets feature tall pull-out pantries.
6. More mini-kitchens
The issue of rational utilization of space has always been pressing. That is why this year LivingKitchen was more than ever fulfilled with mini-kitchen designs for tiny apartments and camper vans.
This year about 200 exhibitors from 21 countries of the world participated in LivingKitchen. And unquestionably the most famous and longstanding players of the industry played the leading role in the success of this fair. Now we suggest that you look through the best kitchen designs displayed at the show. Because one picture is worth a thousand words…
