Astonishing Handcrafted Lamps Made from Tropical Pumpkins
Can you imagine a craftsman, who spends a whole year to create just three lamps? And in doing so he works full time and spends his days mastering his skills and trying to make every new lamp more astonishing than the previous one? Such a craftsman does exist, and the story of his life and lamps is what our today’s article will be devoted to.
His name is Przemek Krawczyński (born in 1983) and he lives in Poland, but the whole world knows him and his unique handmade lamps under the name “Calabarte”. His story began back in 2009, when he was a student studying Civil Engineering. His scientific mind, natural love for accuracy and interest in exact sciences were fancifully coupled with artistic inclinations, and Przemek was trying himself as an architect.
Everything changed when he first came across a gourd. This is a fruit of a tropical calabash tree (that gave the name to the brand eventually), which takes roots from Africa and Asia and is a close relative to our good old pumpkins. When dried, these fruits give plenty of opportunities for processing and creating both ornamental and useful domestic things. Just like wood, this unique natural material can be carved, but unlike wood, gourd is harder from the outside and has a more homogenous texture, without any fibers, knots or growth rings.
Though a few species of this plant can be cultivated in moderate climate, including Poland, Przemek found out that the best shape and texture can be found only in fruits coming from the native land of the calabash tree – Africa. After a voyage to Senegal in 2010 the Polish guy made his first lamp from a gourd fruit and understood that he’s unwilling to stop with just one. Not only was this handmade craft beautiful per se, but it also created astonishing lighting scenarios in the room when switched on.
When a man finds a hobby that makes him passionate, perhaps, the most important thing is not to give it up and turn this life passion into a job despite all difficulties and troubles this decision would surely bring. So, a year after Mr. Krawczyński first made a gourd lamp, he gave up both his studies and his job of an architect to devote himself to the art of handmade lamps fully. Given that his creations were always characterized by high-end quality and amazing precision, Calabarte lamps were soon posted in multiple interior design magazines around the globe. The most logical decision was to start making more lamps, but Przemek would stay faithful to his beliefs and spends his time trying to create every new lamp better than the previous one. Only three lamps per year go on sale, which makes them one of the most anticipated one-of-a-kind lighting fixtures on Earth.
