MDF (medium-density fiberboard) panels are becoming more and more popular among interior designers and common consumers. And this is not surprising, bearing in mind numerous advantages this material has. Firstly, it’s absolutely eco-friendly. Secondly, MDF panels are strong and durable, and when treated with special water- and fireproofing solutions they become resistant to moisture and fire. Finally, MDF is a great material for wall décor if you seek something unhackneyed, eco-friendly and original. Actually, the list of pros of MDF is far longer and we’d like to name each of them. Also, we’ll mention the drawbacks of medium-density fiberboard and, of course, show you numerous examples of using this material in interior design.

Pros of MDF

Eco-friendliness

MDF boards are made from exclusively natural materials that are preliminary excreted from phenol, which is toxic. MDF is created by pressing wood chipboards by hot dry method. The role of a binding element in this case is played by lignin – an organic component released from wood in the context of high pressure. So, there’s no doubt in its safety.

Easy installation

Installation of MDF panels doesn’t require any special skills and can be made by amateurs.

Beauty

A huge choice of colors and textures allows for implementation of boldest designs.

Sound absorption

MDF has great soundproofing characteristics.

Easy to care

Cost

The price of MDF panels depends on the top finishing material, but it’s pretty affordable anyway.

Cons of MDF

Relative waterproofing

Treatment with a protectant is good and it works, but the most sensitive parts of MDF are the edges – permanent exposure to moisture can make them swell. And it goes without saying that MDF is wood per se, and without special treatment it’s very likely to absorb moisture.

Material consumption

A special framework is used in installation of MDF panels, which means that you’ll have to sacrifice precious centimeters.

Flammability

Wood and wood chips in particular burn pretty well and fast, so without special treatment with fire-retardants MDF boards can be extremely flammable.

How to use MDF in interior design?

Wall finishing

Formats of MDF production give room for versatile decorative effects. One of the most popular options is finishing MDF boards with slim veneer in natural wood, including valuable breeds. The next top trend is lamination. Finally, you may opt for eye-catchy 3D effect.

Other finishes

In fact, the use of MDF in interior design is almost unlimited. Walls, ceiling, doors, and cabinets – this material can be adapted for any need.

One more big plus is easy installation. MDF panels are cut easily and leave just small amounts of fine wood dust (no chips). Slight mechanical impacts won’t do any harm to this material, but a strong and sharp blow can split a panel.

Decorative panels

Veneer-coated MDF boards can be safely used as interior accents. You may, for example, finish your fireplace’s chimney or accentuate a dining area in the open-plan living room with this material. As for panels with 3D effect, their application is practically unlimited.

Kitchen panels

Most commonly MDF is used in the kitchen as a material for glossy cabinets’ doors. Also, you may find interiors, in which these panels are used for finishing backsplashes, walls or sliding doors.
